Park of Mountain Subasio is made up of the mountain system taking its name from the same mount which is maybe the most famous one in Umbria. It
rises almost isolated at the Southern end of the chain and delimits
Valle Umbra in the North. The relief of Monte Subasio includes the
tops of Civitelle, Sermolla, Colle San Rufino, Pietralunga besides the
main mount. The relief and the Park are delimited in the North from
the River Tescio, in the North-East from the stream Chiona and in the
South-West from an ideal line linking the two tops of the massif where
Assisi and Spello rise. The top differs from the steep slopes in the
Eastern side because it is plain and presents some evident Karst
phenomena. The slopes of the Subasio are covered from a vegetation
which can be divided into three parts: the first one is characterized
by olive-trees which extend from Assisi to Spello and from Costa di
Trex to Armenzano and San Giovanni. The second strip is characterized
by a natural arboreal vegetation of Turkey Oaks and Wooly Oaks, Hop
Hornbeams, Manna-ashes, Maples, Beeches and Holm Oaks. Plantations of
resinous plants, due to re-afforestations, characterize the third
strip together with peak grasses for pastures. However, the great
variety of the natural environment gives hospitality to a poor fauna
even if hunting was banished several years ago. Wolves are
occasionally seen, Golden Eagles inhabited this territory till the
Sixties together with rock partridges. The actual management of the
mountain helps the new colonisation of the partridge, the wild cat,
the squirrel, the wood pigeon, the magpie, the jay, the porcupine, the
badger, the fox, the weasel, the beech-marten and the wild bear. Among
predatory birds on the Eastern side there are the buzzard, the goshawk,
the scops owl.
